Getting Married in New York

Hi,

Please could you help me? I am a UK resident and would like to marry my girlfriend in New York. We got engaged in the city and it was such a perfect time. We would love to fly back and stay for a week and get married and the go on to Hawaii. Is it possible for a Non US citizen to get married in New York? If so do you have any contact info for me so I can start organising it.
Thanks for your help and your time,
Paul.

Hi Howie,

Thanks for the reply! I am visiting NYC in September aswell! We plan to get married there but to be honest we are a bit clueless about how to arrange things and where to have the ceremony, ideally my girlfriend would like it in Central Parks as that is where we got engaged. It is really difficult being so far away and trying to find someone that is good for the arrangements and ceremony. We are not planning a large wedding just 6 people as my girlfriend does not want a big fuss. SO, she decided to get married in New York and the cost then stops all the family coming accross so she can feel happy with a small party. We have arranged the accomodation and the honeymoon already but the MAIN thing is proving to be more of a headache!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What made you get married in New york?

Thanks alot,
Paul.

You should go to the official Central Park web site. (See the "useful links" page.) YOU MUST HAVE A PERMIT TO GET MARRIED IN THE PARK, so send an application as quickly as possible. The Central Park site has a special section on parks weddings, it's very popular. I think the most romantic spot is the southern, or "English" garden at the Conservatory Gardens. You can have the wedding under an apple (or is it cherry?) blossom tree next to a little pond in an overgrown garden.

Another great spot is the center of the Ramble, in an area that looks like a woodland stream. I've never seen a wedding there though.

Shakespeare Garden is another popular spot.

Best of luck, and if I can help with anything, let me know.

Hi Betty,

Thanks for the info! So much red tape!! Could you recommend a male minister to perform the ceremony?

We were thinking of going to the Boat House after the ceremony for a bite to eat, what do you think?

Thanks,
Paul

Actually, I don't really think it's a lot of red tape. I mean, the park is really popular, and it'd be difficult if there were no schedules -- a dozen weddings could compete for the same spot! And, of course, they want a fee, even for taking photos. I think that's a bit absurd, but what can you do?

I like the Boat House, particularly when it's opened to the outdoors, which it still should be in September. You'll need a reservation there, too.

Sorry I don't know any ministers. Check google.com, or a church of the denomination you want. What denomination are you? I can ask around if you can't find it on the web. Maybe Kelly or Red know one.

I noted your message back to Paul and I am in the same boat as Paul and would love to know how much it costs and how to arrange.

Would you kindly be able to send me details and what documentation is required to do so.

Can you get married in a church?

We want to get married on our own, but do you need a witness and can it be anyone?

Really appreciate your help.

Kind regards
AJ

Felicia, go to the official Central Park web site (there's a link from the "useful links" page on askanewyorker.com). There's a whole section on Central Park weddings.
Hi Paul,

I am also a UK resident, my fiance and I are also planning a small new york wedding and are equally clueless!

Is there any chance you could you pass on any good advice you have been given about ministers, ceremony and meal ideas.

Wishing you well for your wedding.

Thanks

Neil
