essential gifts for those moving to NYC

Posted by Suzanne
Two L.A. friends are moving to your grand city and well, since it is the season of gifting, it seems appropriate to ask: what gifts would be perfect for those moving to your neck of the woods?
One is working for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the other is an academic/economist...
need your suggestions and expertise
thank you.

They're moving from LA? Umbrellas and warm clothing!

How about a Walkman-type thing, if they don't have one? We don't listen to car radios here, we strap on little CD or MP3 players while we're riding the subway.

A NYC subway map shower curtain, so they can learn the system even while getting clean and fresh?

A subscription to the New York Times or Time Out New York magazine, sent to their new address?

How about a one-week Metrocard for each of them, to get them going?
How about their first Metro Cards for riding the subway, and taking the bus!
Two more ideas: Zagut's Restaurant Guide for New York. Great way to find places to eat, as they will be eating out more than they ever did before.

The best map is by The Map Group. It is small, about 4"x6". The side has New York written in large letters (in case you collect other cities) and at the top of the spine, a compass. When you open it there is a Subway map, behind that on each side of the spine are two pop up maps. On the left Downtown Manhatten, on the right Central Manhatten. Inside the spine is a small pen. There is an information section that has: Places to see, places to shop, entertainment, places to eat, practical information, hotel listings, and a place for notes. The last page has Speak It, and talks about the different accents and slang. Great photography and graphics. I would say it is A MUST!

The online address is www.popoutmaps.com, I paid $11.95 for mine not counting tax. Used it a lot when we were there.

How about arranging for a special coupon at their local shoe repair shop . They will surely be wearing holes in their shoes in no time. I go at least twice a year. Twenty a pop. And of course a book or two is always a nice gift. Time and Again by Jack Finney. And of course Here is New York by E. B. White.

I put together gift packs for new New Yorkers, and I included a Zagat's Restaurant Guide, a CD of New York songs, subway and bus maps, Jack Finney's "Time and Again," "New York's 50 Best Places to Discover and Enjoy in Central Park" from the Central Park Conservancy, a MetroCard and a little Statue of Liberty.

Whether you're looking for one gift or many, the Gotham Grocery Department is the best place to start for the most delectable gift options you could imagine for every holiday, birthday, anniversary, or special occasion.
