I just got home from the Tenement Museum, where Russell Shorto was discussing his book, "The Island at the Center of the World." Free.

This summer I saw Brian Stokes Mitchell and Judy Collins at free concerts. Last year I heard Crosby Stills & Nash. Free.

My favorite free thing? Central Park.

If you look around, there are free events every day. Also, check Barnes & Noble, as they regularly host free book readings and concerts.

Don't forget the free Staten Island and Governor's Island ferries. Free bicycle rentals on Governor's Island (on Fridays through mid October).

There's free kayaking on the Hudson, around Chelsea Piers and at the 79th St. Marina.

Galapagos Art Space sometimes offers Free shows, I follow them on Facebook [www.facebook.com]. It's a beautiful venue, they do a lot of burlesque, cabaret and circus type events.
