I love books, but don't necessarily love the big box bookstores.

Can anyone point me toward the best of the independent bookstores in NYC?

Thanks. Really gotta say I LOVE THIS SITE!

Strand Books[www.strandbooks.com] is a great store. One of my favourites is Ivys Books on the Upper West Side. Very small but great atmosphere(Broadway between 92nd and 93rd St)

Thanks Karen for recommending Ivy's. Maverick and I will be sure to visit. Bookstores are a love we both share. Most especially independants.

Thanks, any other good used book stores. Maybe I will go on a quest for a book my husband has been trying to find for years (me too, for him). It's called IN DEFIANCE by Walter Boerner.

If you stay at the Jumel Terrace B&B, you won’t have to look far for some nightstand reading. The elegant and erudite accommodations share the English basement of a brownstone with a specialty bookstore, the main point of business in Harlem’s historic Sugar Hill neighborhood....

Came across BookBook on Bleecker ( between 6th and 7th Aves) when we were staying nearby. Great little shop, definitely a must visit.
