Everyone raves about Blue Smoke. I've been there twice and am still unimpressed.

It may be uber touristy, but I think Virgil's (from the folks who brought us Carmine's) is terrific. They're on 44th just east of Broadway. Wonderful pulled pork sandwich, nice smoky ribs, and totally amazing biscuits (with maple butter!). Great selection of beer.

By the way, Dallas BBQ does make a very good $4.99 take-out whole chicken. Their locations are usually a bit on the grimy side, the best one being Third Ave. & 73rd.

Now I'm hungry!

Try Brother's Barbeque. This is a great bbq place that has food that's as good as the bbq places up in Harlem.
and not so far to travel!
try it.
consistently good food. Don't wear a white shirt.
