The Manhattan Airport Foundation is a land-use constituency committed to the development of an international air-transportation hub situated in the 843-acre site between 59th Street and 110th Street in the center of Manhattan.
Manhattan International Airport will be the largest public works project to be undertaken in New York since the creation of Central Park 150 years ago. Ideally located, the Airport will provide a much needed international air hub offering vital transportation access to individuals living and working in the center of New York City. In addition the project will help to alleviate severe flight delays in the region’s three existing major domestic and international airports and congestion on the traffic arteries which serve them. Perhaps most importantly, the significant reduction in energy consumption and carbon-based emissions pursuant to single-person automobile trips between Manhattan and the region’s existing three major airports underscores the fact that building Manhattan Airport is a critical step in living up to our environmental responsibility.
The transformation of the Park space shall fit with the enlightened paradigm in which urban spaces are infused with new purpose by serving the public good whilst simultaneously elevating the perception and economic well-being of the surrounding neighborhood. In keeping with this directive, vestigial architectural elements of the original Central Park site will, when possible, be retained or reworked in to the context of the new designs. Past will meet present in an aesthetic, yet pragmatic dialogue as our city’s priceless architectural heritage is reshaped and infused with a bold new relevance and sense of purpose befitting the financial and cultural capital of the world.
Founded in 2006, TMAF represents over three years of effort on the parts of civic, environmental and community groups as well as elected officials and city and state agencies. The foundation is structured as a privately held endeavor supported by numerous civic organizations, design professionals, and civic-minded individuals and businesses from New York and around the world, united in the goal of providing a viable transportation hub in New York City for the benefit of all New Yorkers.
