a question about ny and long island

Posted by randomstranger
Hey all,

Ok this question may sound weird but Im trying to figure out something related to religious rulings. So basically, what I wanted to know from everyone is that would you consider taking the LIRR from New Hyde Park to Manhattan, then the A/C and 1 trains uptown, as traveling? SO many people make this journey everyday for work and school right... Would this be considered "traveling" according to New Yorkers?

Thanks

No, it's called commuting. Traveling is when you visit someplace you don't usually go to. Commuting is something you do mostly everyday, ie work and school. People who use the LIRR (along with the MetroNorth and NJTransit) and the Subways daily are commuters.
Oracle?

Could be considered either way. I mean, you need to travel to get from one place to another. If you do it every day for work, then it's commuting, but it's still travel. What's the religious ruling?

If you're Orthodox, you walk from sundown to sundown. NO travelling on the tubes. When they light the menorah in Central Park (from the cherry picker) the NYPD flies the chief rabbi home by helicopter so he gets there before technical sundown. (Or that may be an urban legend, but it's a good one).
