What are some good books about/set in New York (fiction/non-fiction) you recommend?

By E.B White one of the greatest essays ever written(in book form)

One of my all-time favorites is Jack Finney's "Time and Again" (his only good book, unfortunately).

there is a book by Paul Auster called "the new york trilogy"...it's pretty good, I would recommend it.

I really like "Winter's Tale" by Mark Helprin. Very New York.

This book features photos taken by amateur photographers on September 11. The photos were submitted and shown at a Soho gallery that fall, called "Here is New York" after the E.B. White essay (which someone on this string already mentioned). The show kind of sprung up out of nowhere and became very popular.

The photos are shocking and extraordinary and moving, and while it's not the romantic version of NYC, I think it is an historic testament to the city at a defining moment.

try Hubert Selby either Requiem for a Dream (also a movie) or Last Exit to Brooklyn.

I saw that exhibit in SoHo, it was very well done.

Every ones read Catcher in the Rye....

You should get Gangs of New York and Writing New York. Gangs of New York is self explainitory but Writing New York is an anthology of New York writing.
