Grand Central Terminal

Hello! I'm coming to New York in May for only the second time and I am planning to visit Grand Central Terminal. Aside from just walking around, is there any particularly fun or interesting place to stop for lunch or just a drink? Is there anywhere with a view of the tracks? It would be fun to watch the trains come and go.

Thanks for your help.

The Oyster Bar is probably the oldest restaurant at Grand Central. It's on the lower level and not part of the food court. There are different seating areas and the "counter" is one of the most interesting because you can see the chefs at work.

Even if you don't go in, there's an odd acoustical effect at the entrance. If you whisper into a column at one end of the arched area, you can be heard at the column at the opposite end. You'll have to try it to see what I mean.

Enjoy your stay in NYC.

I love the whispering gallery!

There's lots of info on Grand Central's web site, including free tour info:

I'm not a fan of the Oyster Bar. I don't like oysters, and the rest of their menu isn't so wonderful. My favorite spot in Grand Central is the bar at Cipriani Dolci. They make a great cosmo, and it's fun to enjoy a cool cocktail with a view of the commuters as they scurry to their tracks.

The Campbell Apartment is a beautiful, "hidden" bar, but honestly it gets way too crowded for me. I wish it had stayed more hidden! Still, it's wonderful just to see the place. Note that they won't allow you in wearing jeans or sneakers.

You should do the tour of Grand Central!!!! I did it with my kids last weekend they loved it!
I found some windows on the main concourse selling it. It was self guided and I got to stop and eat at the oyster bar. It was a nice couple hours in grand central and I I recall it was only like $4 or $5 bucks what a deal! I will be back!

The food court is in the lower level. Junior's has its cheesecake for sale there (it is from their Brooklyn store).

The trains comes into the platform to the bumper block and stops, dumps its air brake and the passengers exits, heading into GCT. There is not much to see trains coming or going.

The NYC Transit Museum has an Annex by the station masters office. There are subway related gifts/toys and a free exhibit that is subway related.

I love the Oyster Bar!
I was just there the other night. It's always packed, but the place is huge so you shouldn't have trouble being seated, and there is the choice to sit in the regular dining area, at the counter (which is kind of fun) or the saloon (the saloon is where you can get the happy hour specials). The oyster menu is as long as my arm - lots to try. I like their grilled shrimp with coconut rice, too. It's not exactly cheap, but not bad either. I was there the other night and it was $105 for two of us. I think you have to go there at least once - it's a famous old place, give it a try if you're at Grand Central.
