Who Knew There Were So Many Interesting Ways For New Yorkers To Die?

Let's talk about the weird ways people die! Tonight, the Times writes about how New Yorkers die. Apparently, the city uses over 6,000 codes to classify accidental deaths. We looked at the list and found some doozys.

They should create a new category: Choking on your cell phone when another audience member crams it down your throat after it starts ringing in the theater.

Violent crime has declined, but that does not mean you should feel safe.

"In a city where homicides have fallen to a record low, it may be overlooked that there are numerous ways to be killed in New York," writes The Times, "and those who die by accident have done so in numbers remarkably constant over the years."

Accidental deaths discussed by The Times include "watercraft accidents," "exposure to excessive natural heat," "exposure to the cold," "motor vehicle accidents," "unintentional drug poisonings," falls, and fires.

Besides, even if murder is down, there's always bank robbery. A pair of bank robbers was caught in Manhattan after attempting to take a getaway taxi; another pair is still on the loose after a string of holdups at Brooklyn check-cashing services.

Other evergreen sources of criminal activity are religious scams and potentially shady charities.

For example:

The Brooklyn DA is investigating whether a shadowy, Israel-based Kabbalist rabbi bilked vulnerable New York Jews out of hundreds of thousands of dollars by offering divine promises for cash, The Post has learned.

And:
A controversial Queens congressman has steered $290,000 in taxpayer money to two convicted drug dealers for their nonprofit group - which has virtually no assets.
And the Post reports on the mid-party disappearance of photographs commemorating Keith Haring, who died 20 years ago today:

Overebullient glitter- and body-paint-bedecked revelers may have walked off with two dozen Keith Haring-inspired photographs -- together worth tens of thousands of dollars -- that had been hanging on the walls at a Fashion Week after-party in Midtown last Thursday night.

Worth around $3,000 apiece, the large-scale portraits and murals somehow slipped out of the party unnoticed.

One rep for the hosting Hudson Hotel took a charitable position on the vanished prints: "I'm not sure if it was really a theft. Guests may have believed the pictures were there to be taken."

On March 30, false rumors circulated that Langley had been seen aboard a bus heading for Atlantic City. A manhunt along the New Jersey shore turned up nothing. Reports of Langley siting led police to a total of nine states.[4] The police continued searching the house two days later, removing 3,000 books, several outdated phone books, a horse's jawbone, a Steinway piano, an early X-ray machine, and more bundles of newspapers. More than 19 tons of junk were removed from the ground floor of the three-story brownstone. The police continued to clear away the brothers' stockpile for another week, removing another 84 tons of rubbish from the house. Although a good deal of the junk came from their father's medical practice, a considerable portion was discarded items collected by Langley over the years.

Langley Collyer found
On April 8, 1947, workman Artie Matthews found the body of Langley Collyer just 10 feet from where Homer died. His partially decomposed body was being eaten by rats. A suitcase and three huge bundles of newspapers covered his body. Langley had been crawling through their newspaper tunnel to bring food to his paralyzed brother when one of his own booby traps fell down and crushed him.[5] Homer, blind and paralyzed, starved to death several days later.[5] The stench detected on the street had been emanating from Langley, the younger brother.

Both brothers were buried with their parents at Cypress Hills Cemetery, Brooklyn.

That a 22-year-old man survived a 39-floor fall after apparently attempting to end his life last week on the Upper West Side is remarkable. That he chose to jump off a high-rise building as his method of suicide isn't.

The percentage of suicides by jumping in New York City is far higher than the national average, statistics show. And for years leaping off tall buildings and bridges has been one of the most common ways that people in New York City commit suicide, according to city Department of Health data, behind only "hanging, strangulation or suffocation."
