Barack Obama President of the United States

Food for thought….

Today on my way to lunch I passed a homeless guy with a sign that read "Vote Obama, I need the money." I laughed.

Once in the restaurant my server had on a "Obama 08" tie, again I laughed as he had given away his political preference -- just imagine the coincidence.

When the bill came I decided not to tip the server and explained to him that I was exploring the Obama redistribution of wealth concept. He stood there in disbelief while I told him that I was going to redistribute his tip to someone who I deemed more in need--the homeless guy outside. The server angrily stormed from my sight.

I went outside, gave the homeless guy $10 and told him to thank the server inside as I've decided he could use the money more. The homeless guy was grateful.

At the end of my rather unscientific redistribution experiment I realized the homeless guy was grateful for the money he did not earn, but the waiter was pretty angry that I gave away the money he did earn even though the actual recipient deserved money more.

I guess redistribution of wealth is an easier thing to swallow in concept than in practical application.
Oracle?

Why didn't you "redistribute" from your pocket instead of the server's?

I agree with O.
Even though the server was working, you don't know if he was on the brink of losing his apt, or had a dental or medical situation. As a server, most likely he has no medical insurance. A great book to read is Nickel and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenreich.

It has been years since I have given money to a homeless person. One, I rarely carry cash, only my debit card. Two,if by chance they have a liquer or drug problem, I don't want to support it. Instead I will go to the nearest restaurant and buy a meal to go and give it to them, or take them in have them order and pay for it with my debit card.

The greatest thing Denver has done recently is start a program called (I think) Road Home. There are special "parking" meters around the city that you can put your change in. The funds go to programs that help the homeless. As of May more than $115,000 has been raised. I remember the figure 4 million dollars given to panhandlers from residents and tourists, but not if it's per year. Anyway the goal is to redirect the money to actually make a difference. There are less homeless downtown then there used to be. This winter, I have a feeling that will change, so I will try to keep any change I have from my rare cash on hand and put it in the meter outside my building on a regular basis, and carry an extra sandwich and fruit with me, as my cash flow can't buy lunch for me so much anymore.

Thanksgiving - table rental
October 29, 2008 12:58PM
Does anyone know of a place in Manhattan to rent tables and chairs (and possibly linens and plates) for Thanksgiving? I've called several places and they all require a $150.00-$200.00 minimum and my order will only come to about $100.

Thanks Kelly & KM!!! I have been giving someone heck for not voting, and sent that to them. It's the only political discussion he can have with me. As I tell him, no vote, no discussion.

Thank you Jasmina!!!! <3

He has won and I am so very, very happy. Now is the time for us all to get off the sofa and help him to do a very big job. It is not just his job, it is our job. We need to all work together to get our country back on track.

Thanks to all who voted Obama, it was the world's choice, not just ours. The whole world was watching us, and will be watching us. Let's not let them down.

I couldn't agree more. I watched it on BBC news 24 this morning as it happened, and I thought he gave a good account of himself, and was very gracious in defeat. It was like the McCain of old.

I don't have strong opinions either way, but I thought that Obama oozed confidence on his speech. His kids will be please, now they know they're going to get a new puppy. I wonder what they're going to call it?
