Times Square is something to see, but I wouldn't stay there. The area is much too congested (mostly with tourists), making it difficult to walk around. I'd suggest staying on the upper west side. It's a nice residential neighborhood with plenty of shops and restaurants. And still convenient to midtown, a quick 10-minute subway ride away. Plus the UWS is nearer Central Park, the Museum of Natural History and Planetarium. Popular hotels there are: Lucerne, Excelsior, Beacon, Belleclaire, Milburn, On the Ave. (Don't book any hotel without first reading the reviews on tripadvisor.com.)

As for activities for your kids, what kinds of things do they like to do at home?

thanks a million for replies, yes they love chocolate, and I have already booked and paid for doubletree suites times square, at home they like going to concerts and plays but cant afford to do this every night , just thought there may be a restaurant that had a theme thus combining dinner with fun thing to do, found jekyll and hyde but not much else kid friendly at night , not too late but just not to have to go to our hotel room at 6 for the night.

if you're looking for something to do with kids in new york, go to the american museum of natural history, definitely. I can't believe that I have lived here for 17 years and just visited for the first time yesterday...it was fun! The IMAX movie was great, so was the planetarium. You can spend the entire day in there, and it's fun for kids and adults.
