I was born in Brooklyn and loved New York City. In the 1970's I was on a building project with IBM to construct a new division HQ building. I had to make frquent trips to New York and would always go to Mama Leones. It was a total Italian experience with the cooks, the waiters and the musicians all being of Italian nationality. You had to eat very carefully because the quantity of food they served was fantastic as well as totally delicious. They started out with a basket full of great Italian breads on the table. The meal lead off with a fantastic apetizer that was meal in itself. The main course was huge and a taste delight, topped by a great dessert. However, if you ate every last bite to that point, there was no room for dessert. It was a most cherished memory of the great city.

Just came across a Menu from the early 80's. What a beautiful resturant...I asked the waiter if I could buy a tablecloth...since that was my last name also.He said they did not sell them. A few minutes later he came by & put his arm around my shoulder and quitley slipped a Leones tablecloth in my purse. I still have it. what nice experience. Sadly missed. Cheers to u Mamma Leone.

For my sweet sixteen I went to Mama Leones with family and ten friends. It was a wonderful experience. I too have a tale cloth experience. I became very cold and the waiter on his own came and covered me with a clean tablecloth and I went to hand it back upon leaving. He told me it was mine to keep, It is a cherished memory of mine that I still have.
My memory of Mama Leone has been lasting and has always brought smiles and joy when I recall my experience there. Yes, their dessert was something out of this world!!

Hi Dana, you wouldn't remember me, but I am Alfredo Bruno's son. Probably sat next to you at a Yankee game when you were very young. Almost nine years ago I posted to a question on here about the restaurant, and every once in a while, log back in to see if anyone else has commented on it. Today I saw your posts. I wrote something back about 9 years ago. Sorry to hear about your dad. My father told me about his passing and I know he always respected him. Here is the link to what I wrote. Cindy,
Interesting that you posed the cheese question. My parents took me to ML's when I was 14 (1965) and it was an unforgettable experience. Of all the food, the table cheese is what made the greatest impression. It was yellowish with holes and was buttery/nutty. Some years later I rediscovered it as Jarlsberg cheese, which is of course, Norwegian. May not be the same cheese served when you were there.
