Accommodation under 18?!

Hey guys,

I'm planning on coming to Noo Yawk with a few friends of mine, but we're all under 18 and finding a safe place where to stay in The Citay is crucial.

Is there anyplace that will offer (safe) ACCOMMODATION to guys UNDER 18?!

Thank you so much!

There's 1000's of hotels which are safe. You pay and get a key.

Kennedy, that isn't true.

The problem is that no hotel in NYC will take someone under 18 because kids under 18 can't sign contracts. In other words, they could skip out on the rent or trash the room and the hotel would have no recourse, because they're legally considered "children" not responsible for their actions in that way.

Similarly, if someone under 18 is traveling alone and gets hurt, the hotel may be held responsible because they are basically considered to be caring for a child. This is a legal issue!

Even at youth hostels and YMCAs, those who are 17 years of age and less must be accompanied by an adult (http://www.newyork-hostel.com/k_base/questions/128/Are+there+age+restrictions+for+staying+in+hostels%3F)

The best bet may be to find a family run bed and breakfast which will agree to the arrangement, because small B&Bs often bend rules. Most probably, the B&B owner will have to be in touch with the parents of the minor travelers and get a LARGE deposit for potential damage or distress. If you have a number of people, you could rent out th whole B&B. Some possible options:

Red is correct. We have run into this problem with students who want to travel after staying with us.

Our son wants to spend a few days on his own in NY. The way we are getting around that is we will all check in together, but we parents will check out and travel to Maryland while the our son hangs in NY. I am just going to say he is 18 when we check in most likely if it's a hotel. If it's a b&b, I will see how they feel about it ahead of time.

It's a pleasure to be corrected by Red.

bxgrl74, the age of majority in many foreign countries is lower than it is here. Legal "adult" in the UK, for instance, is considered 16 for a lot of things - you can leave school at 16, get a job, travel around the world, get married, join the army (I think), whatever. It seems young but that's just the way it is in those countries.

So 17 year olds would be considered just like 19 year olds here, and a lot of American 19 year olds travel.

Thanx ev'ry1.

Well, we're two 17 girls and one 17 boy. We've been traveling alone around Europe since we were 16, and we've traveled around the globe with our parents too. Besides the fact that we are soooooo much in Luv with the Citay, this time we just wanted to do something both challenging and funny and so very special. And Noo Yawk just sounded perfect!

But is NY that dangerous?! We figured NY was one of the safer cities in the US, also because ppl just mind their own business, (Gawd bless New Yorkers!), and you've got really everything packed up in there...sounds much more safer than Milan where 4 guys tried to pick me up silly following me everywhere till I was scared to death and didn't know where to find a damn shelter, (Okay, fancy clothes aren't worth this kind of experience, I will nevah go back in there!).
.....naive us?

I think I've found someplace to stay: [www.bigapplehostel.com], I've read they don't apply age restriction but I guess I'd better email them to make sure.

Is W45th relatively safe?!

Thank u so muchhhh!

Kitty, New York is now the safest large city in America. It is safer in terms of violent crime than London, I don't know about Milan. And most crimes are either in some bad neighborhoods you wouldn't go into anyway, or are preying on drunk, confused people late at night. At 17, the penalties for anyone who served you alcohol would be VERY severe anyway. And as you say, New Yorkers are generally pretty friendly and leave people to themselves if they don't want to be bothered.

However, you will have to deal with social attitudes at every stage that 17 year olds are "children" and that if you are without your parents some sort of horror will occur! That's simply the attitude here in the US where people are considered children for longer than in Europe.

By the way, I just called the Big Apple Hostel and they said the minimum age was 18 - same reasons as usual. So I really suggest you call those bed & breakfasts.

Thanks again Red for being so kind and even calling the hostel.

You're right, we're still "children", and our independence isn't actually an European custom or anything of the sort but it's simply due to our personal experience and the way we were brought up. So the attitude in here isn't that much different.

We'll ponder on our trip, and eventually get in touch with those B&B's.

Hi all!
I'm 17 (18 in January) and I'll be travelling to New York for a week alone in December.
I was wondering what to do in terms of accommodation, I know a lot of places don't accept under 18's alone but wondered if there was any exceptions.
I also have an Airbnb account where it states my age is 18, but I'm not sure if they would ask to check my ID.
Another option is using the couch surfing website (again it states my age is 18), I did recently use this website and the guy I was staying with didn't ask for any proof of age.
But the only thing I don't like about couch surfing is that you don't get as much freedom.
Anyway any tips on what i should so would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks
