Cheap Supermarkets in Midtown?

What are the names of some cheap supermarkets in Midtown (near 7th and 55th, to be more exact)? I'm staying for a few days and want to save money by buying groceries rather than eating out every meal. Thanks!

Groceries in general are not cheap here, but you could try Gristedes--according to their website the closest to you is at 54th and 8th. There is also a Food Emporium on 49th and 8th, and a Whole Foods in the Time Warner Center at Columbus Circle. Both of those chains tend to be cleaner and have better-quality products, but they're also more expensive.

For more of a "New York" grocery experience, why not head to Fairway (74th and Broadway) or Zabar's (80th and Broadway) on the Upper West Side? They're both easy to reach from the 1 train, which stops at 72nd and 79th Streets.

There are no cheap supermarkets in midtown. Whole Foods is expensive as is the Food Emporium. Gristede is moderately expensive.
There is a Dag's on 57th St near the corner of 9th Ave.This is probably your best bet.

Whole Foods is still cheaper than eating out. Especially if you would like to eat a nice meal.

Most likely you will only be eating 2 meals a day as most travelers do. Fruit, cheese, and fresh rolls from any market will make a great breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

How expensive are the supermarkets in Mid Town Manhattan New York? I'm going there for 4 day city break from the UK next week, and I'll be staying at the Bedford Hotel on 118 Ave 40th street in Mid Manhattan. Is there a supermarket or grocery near by, that I could easily walk to? I've heard that China Town is cheap to eat in is that true?

Hi Gary, I'm from the UK and was in NYC last week (wish I was still there!) I don't know why you would need a supermarket to be honest, there are loads of great places to eat and you can certainly find reasonably priced and even very cheap food, compared to what you get in our rip-off country! lol

Try any of the numerous deli's that are around. Or even the street carts do coffee and a bagel for the supercheap $1.25!! (About 60p in the UK - NB one coffee in Starbucks in the UK costs £3 - or $6!!!) For breakfast you really can't beat Morning Star Cafe on 2nd Ave betwn 50th & 51st St.

ps - The Bedford is 118 East 40th St (There isn't a 118 Ave)

pps - If you're flying to JFK, can I recommend the Air Train and Subway as a way of getting into Manhattan ... only $7 as opposed to around $55 in a cab!

Have a great time.

Leigh.
