it is a dutch name, you can't pronounce it correctly. I can't tell you wat the correct pronounciation is because you can't hear it. just follow the english version as written above.
it is pronounced:
Sti vuh sunt
that is a long i...sounds like eye.

Thanks for asking steph....I wondered too. Nothing brands you as an outsider quicker than mispronouncing place names!

Now...which way to E. Houston?

Where I live there are several place names that brand 'outsiders'......

MEOPHAM (mep-um).
IGHTHAM (eye-tum).
BROADDITCH FARM (brad-ich)
WROTHAM (root-um)

Confused?

Hello everyone,

This is the way it is pronunced!

Bed-Sty-Vesant:

I am Australian and live in New York, they pronounce all those words pretty much the same as you or I would but being from NZ you may pronounce some of the vowels a little differently.

Egg plant would be called aubergine and some people would drop the h from herbs.

What are you making a pie?

The first thing you should learn about New Yorkers is that we don't have the time to do your homework. Everybody in the US pronounces all of those words the same, except for herbs, we say erbs.

You're welcome.
You don't know have time to "do someone's homework," and yet you have time to bitch about it. Don't add to the bad rep New Yorker's have for being rude!
