New York City Marathon

Hello everyone, we are supposed to go to New York on the first week end of november and somebody told me that it's the New York marathon week end. Would you suggest to not go that week end? Will it be more croweded or it makes no differences? Thanks for your answers, it will help us to take a decision.

What a great time to visit the city! The last few years the weather has been gorgous. And the marathon is a lot of fun to watch. Very inspiring. Bedford Ave in Brooklyn aka Williamsburg(you take the L train to Bedford Ave first stop in Brooklyn from Union Square 14th Street...10 min ride) is a great viewing area. Have lunch at SEA,walking distance, that's if you like thai food.

Absolutely a fabulous time to come. It's great to see the elite runners, but even better to cheer on those runners at the end of the pack. Lunch at SEA has to be wonderful, too! If you can manage a hotel that weekend, you're in luck.

It really is a great time to be NYC for all the race and weather reasons given -but believe it when people tell you that hotle proces are through the roof. My wife works with a Hilton property and their rates for that weekend are 50-100% higher and they require 2 nights minimum.

That's a good choice. There are no hotel rooms in town that weekend, basically.

The premier event of New York Road Runners, the ING New York City Marathon is one of the world's great road races, drawing more than 100,000 applicants annually.

The race attracts many world-class professional athletes, not only for the more than $600,000 in prize money, but also for the chance to excel in the media capital of the world before two million cheering spectators and 315 million worldwide television viewers. As any one of the more than 700,000 past participants will attest, crossing the finish line in Central Park is one of the great thrills of a lifetime.

Fired up. Bloomberg compared the hurricane to 9-11 in that we need to move foreward. These are two extremely different types of human tragedies. Man made vs terrorism, where two very different responses are in order.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg came under fire Friday for pressing ahead with this weekend's New York Marathon in a city still reeling from Superstorm Sandy, with some New Yorkers saying that holding the race would be insensitive and divert police, generators and other resources when many are still suffering.

Joan Wacks, whose Staten Island waterfront condo was swamped with 4 feet of water, predicted authorities will still be recovering bodies when the estimated 40,000 runners from around the world hit the streets for the 26.2-mile race Sunday, and she called the mayor "tone deaf."

"He is clueless without a paddle to the reality of what everyone else is dealing with," she said. "If there are any resources being put toward the marathon, that's wrong. I'm sorry, that's wrong."

A picture is worth a thousand words. Here's a photo from The Post of generators that were providing power to press tents at the marathon. These generators can provide power to 400 homes.

I'm sorry the mayor took so long to change his mind, and so many runners and their families lost travel money. But this year's race had to be canceled.
