Pale Male red-tail hawk near Central Park

Posted by SAM
Hi - bringing my kids to NYC this weekend - we are major fans of red-tail hawks and have loved the story of Pale Male over the years - would love to see the spot where he and his mate nest - can someone point us to the area?

Oracle love that link above. Stunning photos

When the gentlemen aren't fielding tourists' queries about the birds, they engage in the twin passions of many New Yorkers—celebrity name-dropping and discussing real estate. Often the two together. "The male sometimes brings a pigeon to the female in the nest," Mr. Davis explained. "She brings it over to Barbara Walters' terrace."

She has a troupe of loyal followers, her own Facebook page, and a paparazzo who follows her everywhere, hoping to catch her in the best light.

She is not Lady Gaga or Britney Spears.

She is the red-tailed hawk of Tompkins Square, a Buteo jamaicensis, or soaring hawk, with a 50-inch wingspan and an appetite for pigeons, mice and rats.

While the more famous Pale Male — a red-tailed hawk who flew to fame when he moved onto a ledge of a swanky Fifth Avenue co-op in 2002 — has a biopic, “Pale Male: A Hawk, a City, a Love Story” in theaters now, this Tompkins Square chick boasts something just as important: downtown street cred. Call her the hipster hawk.

It was suggested by a reader that Pale Male's new girl who is so very dark, might be Valkyrie (or Dominatrix as she's now sometimes called downtown) who is also dark and has spent her time down in Tompkins Square Park for several years now.

I contacted Francois who said he'd look into it.

Then I received an email from birdwatcher and pro photographer Francois Portmann saying in part--

CENTRAL PARK — One of the Upper East Side's most high-profile couples — the famous red-tailed hawks Pale Male and Lola — appears to have broken up, with watchers fearing that the female has died.

Legendary hawk Pale Male and his partner of nine years, Lola, haven't been seen together for a month after years of watching over Central Park from their nest atop a Fifth Avenue Co-Op, the Urban Hawks blog reported.

After weeks of watching Violet and Bobby, the red-tailed hawks nesting on a ledge outside of NYU's President's office at Bobst Library on Washington Square, a small miracle occurred. Hawk experts had given up on the three eggs, but late yesterday one tiny bird hatched.

I've been fascinated watching Violet and Bobby as they took turns sitting on the eggs, carefully turning them and watching for signs of life. It's hard to see in the bright sunshine, but later in the day you can just make out the Washington Arch on the left side of the frame. These hawks picked a nice spot to nest, a real room with a view.

Love watching Violet nest on the webcam. I hope her leg gets treated soon. Poor mama. Thanks Oracle. Counting down to seeing you soon.

Poor Violet. The "experts" say they don't think she's in pain, but she couldn't put the slightest weight on her foot without spreading her wing for balance. That looks very painful to me, and how could it not be? The state wildlife agency has taken over. They're monitoring her to see what they should do. It'll be tough no matter what. First, they would have to go out on the connecting ledge to try and trap Violet because the window opens out and would push the nest off the ledge if they opened it. But as soon as they set any kind of trap, Violet's hawk eyes would notice it and she would abandon the fledgling.

It looks like the cause of her injury is a wildlife band, which is doubly sad that it was probably placed on her by conservationists.

I just watched her for a few minutes, but had to turn it off when she started feeding on a squirrel.

To update goings-on in the red-tailed hawk world, sadly, New York lost two much-loved hawks. First, Washington Square Park's Violet died in December, after she underwent surgery to try and save her. And just this week, Central Park's Lima, the mate of Pale Male, was found dead, apparently after eating a poisoned rat.

But hawks move on. Pale Male lost no time in finding a new romance. And Rosie has been gathering twigs and is redecorating Violet's Washington Square nest. She and Bobby are "keeping company." And the fascination continues, as their romance was captured on video:

Roger Paw continues to report and photograph Washington Square Park's hawks, as well as the resident hawks of Tompkins Square Park, Central Park's Pale Male, and the Southern Central Park hawks. Her blog has some beautiful photos of that last pair as they fly around the iconic rooftops of the Sherry-Netherland, the Pierre and the Crown Building. Nice neighborhood!
