I must say, as I live in Harlem in 128th street between lenox av & adam clayton powell, most of my neibors in my building are white. I am african American and I must, say that your comments come across as a bit rascist and qite insulting. I am a 23yr. Old male, and I remember walking home from the grocery store and I had many bags of groceries in my hand. A white couple male and femail where walking towards me. Two of them, and one of me. I didn't look threatening and I had arms filled with groceries and and the lady clutched her husbands arm and the ran in the street on the oppisite side of the park cars. I have friends of different ethnicities, colors and creed and I have come across more bad exspiriences in my nieborhood from white americans then blacks with rascism. When I moved out here last summer, my landlord failed to give me a mailbox key for my mailbox. I was instead giving the key to a blank unamed or labeled mailbox which I assumed was mine as a new tenant plus I had the key, only to find out that it was my neibor mailbox and that my mailbox had the names of the previous tenants inwhich I had the wrong key but I didn't know. Someone had told my white neibors that the black hoodlum had broken into the mailbox. My neibors moved out because of this. It was just a mistake on the landlords part, and I did not know, I was just assuming that the mail I was getting was for the previous tenants. So I had to wait on the mail lady everyday before I go to work or college classes to collect my mail, and as my white neibors come in and out of the building, they would ask me very prudely, "why are you sitting on this stoop, do you live here?" As if an african american male can't possibly live in they're building. Ts gotten to the piont where I don't speak to my neibor. I have a clean record, not a trouble maker and a all around religious guy and for someone to imply that a neiborhood is bad or dangerous because of its african american population is downright insulting. Theyres crime in all five boroughs and they are not all commited by africans americans, but latinos, asians, and whites as well...again I am not rascist and two of my bestfriends are jewish and italian but some of these commits are terrible.
Convent Avenue/West 141st Street

Hi,
Please could anybody give me some information about the area Convent Avenue/West 141st. I'm thinking about booking a bed and breakfast in this area for when I come to visit as a tourist to the city later this year.
I've visited your great city a few time and always stayed mid/downtown. I'd like to stay uptown this time.
I see that the nearest subway is 145th Station. I walking to and from 141st recommended or not as a tourist dragging suitcases along? or are taxi's freely available from 145th?
Any info or guidance would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks

What is the area around the former Polo Grounds site (155th/8th Avenue) like? Is it safe enough in the early afternoon for a student to survey the area for a class assignment?

I have lived in Harlem now for two years, and I have never felt endangered, but I had a friend who is from the Bronx that said he couldn't believe that I was living in this area (140th and Lenox), he said that it is a rough area. Is that true? Have I been ignorantly walking around at night when I should take the area more seriously?

disclaimer: I have lived in many boroughs in the 4 years I have lived in NY, and every neighborhood has its bad spots, Your just as likely to get robbed in Williamsburg as you are in Inwood.
If you have to ask the question, why choose to live in Harlem? Both West Harlem and Central Harlem are gorgeous, cultured, historically Black (and safe) areas--they'll be that way whether or not you live there. Next time, gentrifying pea-brain, research the area before you move there--it's a lot smarter than asking inane questions.

That seems a little harsh.... either I didn't make it clear enough, or you are just being aggressive, but I never said that I felt endangered. Nor did I say anything negative about the area. I am simply asking if my first instinct, that the area wasn't that bad, was incorrect. There is no reason to be a jerk. If you have an actual answer please by all means give it, but cutting down people who are asking honest questions is bad form....

By the way the reason that I ask, is I am not from here, and I was raised to be very excepting and to explore other cultures, but sometimes I give people to much benefit of the doubt. That can get people into trouble. When my friend said what he said, it shocked me (And also my friend grew up in hunts point, so I am not getting my information from some white upper middle class snob).

You know its New Yorkers like you Harlem on the Hudson, that give NY's bad names, because you are so quick to judge people with out really wanting to learn where they are coming from. You probably pride yourself on being "Self-aware" or "well versed", but when you use it to make yourself better than other people, you only make yourself into a version of people obviously dislike. What did you call me, a "gentrifying pea-brain?" This only makes people, like me, who are from other places, not want to ask and learn about cultures. You alienate me and you alienate yourself. You are the type of person that keeps gentrification going. Not by supporting it, but by making learning inaccessible to others. Luckily for you, I am not a "gentrifying pea-brain" and I wont let one person ruin a view that I have on learning about the world around me. Word to the wise though, you can never judge a book by its cover, and I would say the same applies to this forum. No matter how stupid a question is to you, there will always be a person on the other end waiting for an answer, and who knows, your reaction could determine a long life of open-mindedness and mental exploration, or you could create a bigot, someone who neither learns about the world nor cares for the humanity in it.

sorry... I can't handle people who punish honest questions...end of rant

My goodness, people...

I do not live in Harlem. I live in London, UK. I have visited Harlem several times though (I always stay on 118th when I'm in NYC) and I'm finding these comments hilarious. People feel unsafe because they're the only white person on the street? So what, I should feel unsafe because I also love to hang out in Brooklyn (awesome bar on York St) where I and my boyfriend are, every single time, the only black people? In fact, in my company in London, I am THE ONLY BLACK PERSON. IN THE ENTIRE COMPANY. *gasp* Should I feel frightened to walk into my office?

What a bunch of very silly questions and statements. It is as if you (those of you asking/commenting) are saying "black people live in ghettos, white people in safe, beautiful neighbourhoods". You know...9/10 serial killers are white, between 20-45 and male? Should I be frightened of every male fitting that description?

Anyway, I'm ranting a little. But really, people! Get a grip! In London, you can turn a corner and find £1m+ (sterling GBP) houses RIGHT NEXT to council estates. Like everywhere else. Get over it. In fact, 10years ago I lived in a neighbourhood where you could hear gunshots. Now I live in a gorgeous suburban area, but my old area has been completely gentrified and I couldn't afford to live there now. Things change. Harlem has changed. Heck, the whole of NYC has changed.

I love Harlem. I love Brooklyn. I also love Greenwich. If I ever move to NYC though, I'd probably live in Harlem, just do my research and be a little streetsmart. You can get a LOT more for your money, and I'm sure 10years later I'll be glad I got in on the action when I still could.

Rant over. To everyone in NYC - I love your city!!!

So just that I am clear, this site is called "ask a new yorker?"

Can a new yorker give me a simple polite response that does not involve insults and/or trivializing the questions/concerns that I have? No one is trying to be racist, I just want to know, and there is nothing wrong with that. If I can't ask a question as an outsider to New York, what is the point of having this site? Doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

If anyone would be kind enough to answer my question, I really would be thankful.

thanks.
