rmein has no idea what he is talking about. either he is just an ignorant fool or he is trying to keep more ignorant fools from moving into the neighborhood. If you are worried walk around, check it out; check out the crime stats for the precinct, they are all online. if you are not willing to actually check out the neighborhood yourself due to fear, I would suggest another neighborhood. taking an apartment sight unseen, is already taking a big risk; choosing a neighborhood you are comfortable with may be a wiser choice Only you can decide what is safe for you. People have very different thresholds regarding fear and safety. What neighborhoods do you consider "safe"? I am just curious.

Just to add to what I said: Harlem is generally safe, but be prepared to run really fast if the ghetto kids start messing with you.

I am a 23 year old, and I moved to harlem when I was sixteen. I lived there for two years, then moved away. I lived on 125th and Lenox, I moved back a year ago and live on 150th and eighth. All of Harlem is basically fine, and skin color won't change that. I feel perfectly safe walking around at night, and have wandered around Harlem with friends until 4am. The 'not safe' areas of Harlem are still decent and anyone could easily live there and avoid trouble.

The area by City College is fine.

The area surrounding City College is very ghetto and can be uncomfortable, but it is safe O_O . You will not be shot in the middle of the street at night. The reason why people get shot is because they are either targeted or by accident. But shoot outs are rare in any place in Harlem these days. The area around Colombia University is lovely! It is beautiful! Harlem is wonderful now. You just need to be aware of your surroundings. Folk in Harlem will not mess with you for no reason. Trust me. People in Harlem tend to mind their business. 145th and St. Nick is okay. It is safe but it is just ghetto. That's all. The best place to live near City College is on Convent Avenue. It is like living near Central Park. Harlem is relatively safe. Just be smart. That's all. 113th and 8th Avenue is like (White Zone) That is not Harlem. That is called MorningSide Heights. 145th Street near the River is ghetto but safe. If you want to live somewhere like on 5th Avenue, try 145th Street and Riverside. 129th Street and 5th and Mad is wonderful. Feels like living in greenwich village, but across the street, it can be ghetto, but safe. Avoid the subway at night and your fine. Harlem is ghetto but safe most of the time. Good luck! I am a resident of East Harlem for 15 years.

No.
There was just a shooting infront of my building tonight. a girl got shot and the person shooting wasn't aiming at anyone he was just shooting in the air like 10 times and hit a girl who was trying to run away. Theres always kids hanging out and I have honestly never walked past them not once to not hear them talking about fighting. They are all angry teenagers and all they want to do is fight. If you are not in that crowd thats fine you will probably be fine but just know your taking a risk of getting shot if you walk past this crowd of angry teenagers who spend all of their days standing infront of the laundry mat talking about fighting. This isn't a race thing at all its a life style that these teens were raised in and they are the ones to look out for. Not grown men not grown women the crowd of teens who dont seem to have any parents, or respect.

Iv lived in harlem and Spanish harlem and there is defiantly a level of threat so keep your guard up and keep to yourself. you will be fine. And parents please keep your angry teenagers on a leash for god sakes they are out there shooting people.

hi Red,

I'm possibly moving to an apartment on Riverside Drivr on W 136th. Is that area safe ? Is there a subway nearby ? Will I have a problem walking late at night around this side of the neighbourhood ? Cheers
Hi New Yorker,

I am from Sydney, and my BF and I will visit NY and stay there for 5 nites in Nov.
I found a studio, location is 1st Av and E2 st.

Dose any one know if this area is ok to stay and walk on the street at nite? Coz I have no idea where is safe, and where is not...confused smiley

Thanks heaps!

Hi There,

We(4 girls) are travelling to the US as tourists for the 1st time and found a temporary home on 137th street/Edgecombe Av...how safe is this place? We plan to eat out alot and party...is it safe to get back to our "base home" at like 1am?

We also plan to walk to central park and most of the NYC...will it be safe and what should we watch out for?

Finally, How much are metro cards from harlem to midcity? duration?

Thanks

TWO CENTS:

1)
Surest way to know if one neighborhood is safe (or safer than another) is to check the precinct reports. This gives a detailed description of what arrests were made and when.

2) Check the definition of gentry and you will see the displacers are anyting but.

Red (if you are still out there? - or any other Manahattanite)

My 22 year old daughter has been in Manhattan since mid-June; she has been staying at UWS around 112th and Broadway but must not find a share until end of year.

She has an offer to take a BR in a 4BR at 111th and Lenox with 3 acquaintances who are all about in her situation.

what is your opinion (or any other NYCer) of this area?

thanks
