Then what about the Hamptons? How does that fit into all this?

"the Hamptons" have nothing to do with the boroughs. They are a series of small towns way out on long island. East Hampton, South Hampton, Bridgehampton, etc.
they're not part of new york city at all. It takes a few hours to drive to the hamptons from NYC.

The boroughs are actually counties. Manhattan is New York County, The Bronx is Bronx County, Queens is Queens County, Brooklyn is Kings County and Staten Island is Richmond County.

New York City is made up of five county. City government refer them as boros. Ask a typical New Yorker about what county you live at, they think it means the suburban area outside of the city.

LA county are called Parishes. Don't ask me why.

Burroughs are essentially counties. In fact, each of the five Burroughs in NYC are also counties with the exact same physical boundaries. For instance, the Burrough of Brooklyn is in Kings County.

The only difference between a Burrough and county in how government is structured. Counties can have different mayors for each of the many towns that comprise it. NYC has just one mayor, who oversees all five Burroughs. There are other differences - all minor, which escape me right now.

NYC is comprised of five Burroughs - Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, Staten Island, The Bronx.

What would be considered "downtown" NYC?

Greenwich Village, Soho, Chinatown, Tribeca and essentially the lower east side are traditionally considered the "downtown" areas of Manhattan. Everything south of that is the financial district, more commonly known as lower Manhattan.

Downtown Brooklyn is the area across the East River alongside Brooklyn Heights and DUMBO. It houses most of Brooklyn's skyline. Parts of South Brooklyn also claim downtown status. It depends who you ask.

The South Bronx can be considered Downtown Bronx, but this term is not widely used, it is mostly real estate jargon. Fordham houses a more vibrant downtown quality with the university nearby and Arthur Avenue.

Flushing serves primarily as Queen's downtown area, most notably for it's proximity to Shea Stadium (now Citifield), Flushing Meadows Park, as well as a handful of ethnic neighborhoods, and plenty of eateries. Again, this can be disputed with other Queens neighborhoods.

How would you decscribe the differences between life in the different burroughs? Are the differences mostly economic, racial, industrial, etc.? If I were to drive through the different burroughs, what would be the most noticeable differences in the way people live? Thanks.
