Why are New Yorkers so rude?

LOL! Just reread my rant above, and well THIS MONTH ONLY for the DNC you can get a penthouse downtown for about $3,000 a day, a week, or a month depending on size, site, and amenities.

I was wondering if I should put my 5 bedroom house up on craigslist in case Bruce needs a place to stay. [www.examiner.com]

Are you kidding me?
When i was first planing my first and only trip "so far" to NYC, everyone i spoke to in the city (from calling the hotel with my silly questions to making dinner reservations to everyone on askanewyorker.com.) went over and beyond to help me and answer all of my questions. When i was visiting NYC the only rude people i came across were the tourist. If you ask me people in the Midwest (where i come from) are so much ruder. Take a look at all of the regular folks on this site that take there time to help answer our silly questions. Seem like pretty great folks to me!!!

Ralph Gardner Jr. rocks.

I'm not a confrontational person. I want people to like me. Most of all, I dread asking someone to do something reasonable like turn down the sound on their stadium-strength car stereo, only to have them come after me with the truncheon they keep in their glove compartment for such occasions.

Too bad cell phone jammers are illegal. I'd use one all the time -- on the bus, theaters, restaurants...hey, even just strolling in the park! Like your own little cone of silence. I stopped enjoying Central Park concerts because the music is drowned out by cell phone conversations.

I sat next to a woman on the bus this afternoon whose ipod was blasting, her head was bobbing, she was dancing in the seat, and texting at the same time. Oh, and snapping gum. I was hoping all the electronic pulses would reach critical mass and she would explode.

Now, if they'd make a discrete device to move pedestrians to the right side of the street, it would be worth a lot.

Great story KM, thanks for sharing. I want to be Phillip's penpal.

Oracle I would love that Jammer. I take the train to work, if someone is on their cell when I sit down, I get up and move.

One recent morning I was seated in the middle of the car totally engrossed in my book, which means I zone out all sound (the art of being the oldest of 7). About halfway to work I felt like someone was staring at me, looked up and saw the lady across from me staring hard over my shoulder. I then heard who she was looking at. Everyone was very uncomfortable with this kids language on the phone, his loudness, and his desperate conversation. I could not tune him back out, because I was pissed that no one was saying anything. I finally turned around and yelled in my best don't mess with me mom voice "DUDE!!! You and Shelly need to have that conversation somewhere in private, get off the train, or shut up!" You then heard everyone else mutter - hallelujah, thank you, yes please". He lowered his voice, and got off at the next stop. Ruined my whole morning to have to yell.

I also move when I hear someone's music blasting out of their ipod. The only time I asked someone to turn their's down was on a plane. Same thing, it was driving people nuts. He was at the window across the aisle from me. I was in the middle seat. I leaned over and asked the guy on the aisle to get the kids attention, and then said very nicely "can you please turn down your music". He was actually embarrassed and did so right away.

How can one answer properly to such a baised and generalized question like that?

Obviously excluding any real, native New Yorker, I'd like to say that the responses here are just from tourists who: had one or two bad encounters, and who don't seem to get the New York no-BS attitude and way of life.

There are plenty of benevolent and friendly people all across New York. In your case, and others, there may seem to be a kind of 'culture shock' or there was simply a few people that did something to offend.

No need to make such generalizations.

"The only rude folks I have ever run into are the tourists!!!" - This and other things about tourists people on this website said is exactly why I experienced SOME New Yorkers to be rude during my visit last month. It's like "you're just a tourist, you're beneath me, you're not worth my attention". Needless to say I did not stand in anyone's way and I don't miss out on saying "Thank You".

I also met two men who came over and offered their help when I must have looked very lost with my map of NYC, which was really nice and I really had a fantastic time in Manhattan.

I lived in London for a long time and I guess I expect too much now - I never met one single person who treated me anything but friendly. Maybe except for busdrivers....

Get Out of My Way, You Jerk!

Signs of a sidewalk rager include muttering or bumping into others; uncaringly hogging a walking lane; and acting in a hostile manner by staring, giving a "mean face" or approaching others too closely, says Leon James, a psychology professor at the University of Hawaii who studies pedestrian and driver aggression.

For the cool-headed, sidewalk rage may seem incomprehensible. After all, it seems simple enough to just go around the slow individual. Why then are some people, even those who greet other obstacles with equanimity, so infuriated by unhurried fellow pedestrians?
