New Yorkers Take Action With Kindness

Recently I had a conversation with the kind and generous Joan Hornig. We discussed philanthropy, one of her many passions.
Ask a New Yorker is Asking New Yorkers to pay it forward by performing an act of kindness. Then Ask another New Yorker to do the same. There's something called the New York Minute, this takes all of 30 seconds.
Possibly this will inspire other New Yorkers to do the same.
This could be contagious. We hope so.
If doing something kind for someone else is difficult for you, do something kind for yourself.

This review is from: I Hate the Dallas Cowboys: Tales of a Scrappy New York Boyhood (Paperback)

Lights, Camera, Action. This quintessential New York memoir should be made into a movie. It’s got it all…. It’s funny, irreverent, truthful and daring.
“In a standoff with a nun who demanded I finish my lunch. I sculpt the detested white beans on my plate into a crucifix. It was my bid for mercy” How can you not fall in love with this kid?
Where do you begin a review when the first sentence in the book reads: “During the first year of my parents’ marriage, 1952, my mother was shot dead.” The manner in which this family interacts is both twisted and beautiful. By the way, this tragedy involves ketchup.
I Hate The Dallas Cowboys transports you into Pryor’s world, his neighborhood, his family, his New York - which essentially becomes your New York. Black and white photos are perfectly positioned throughout the book. I particularly enjoyed seeing Tommy and his brother Rory using Bethesda Fountain as their own personal swimming hole. Can you imagine seeing kids swimming in the fountain amongst the water lilies today? The book is comprised of 53 entertaining chapters which leave you wanting more.
In another heartfelt chapter called, ‘Hold My Hand’ a childhood memory elicits the fathers and grandfathers hand holding techniques -‘His hand around mine took my spirits pulse and temperature. It made the sadness and loneliness melt away’. This is good stuff and I highly recommend this book.

This thread hasn't exactly caught fire. Regardless we still think it's a cool thing to pay it forward which can come in all shapes and curves. I'm the kind of person that for the most part loves people. Regardless of how dysfunctional we are at times I keep trying to see the good in us all. With that said during yesterday's walkabout I past a down and out women curled up in a doorway. I expressed out lout to another woman who was feeding squirrel and pigeons,"So sad" Squirrel woman responded:"We all have choices"
This ensued into a beautiful and sharing conversation .Again Squirrel woman was for most accounts someone that you you might think was homeless herself. Not. Again fascinating and well spoken, angelic. The conversation danced. Eventually I asked her where she lived. Her response: I own that building on the corner.....and I just sold another.....We hugged.

Point being it was a very cool loving conversation.
